A home by Leonel Moreno Jr. - in the Lago Escondido subdivision at Sharyland Plantation - was awarded the Rio Grande Valleys best new home of the year. Moreno’s model home took the Best of Show award in the Rio Grande Valley Builders Association Parade of Homes.
Rocass competed against 20 other homes, ranging from modest homes just above $100,000 to an Alonzo Cantu mansion in McAllen valued at more than $800,000. Moreno’s entry was in the $600,000 to $650,000 division.
The Parade of Homes is the Builders Association’s premier yearly event, raising money for the association and giving builders a chance to showcase their homes outside a traditional setting.
“We had a lot of people come through those two weekends,” said Gary Burch, owner of Gary Burch Construction in Edinburg.
Burch showcased a four-bedroom home in the Wind Rose development in Pharr. That home took the top prize in the $201,000 to $250,000 single family home division.
The Parade of Homes concept is a staple in many communities across the country, where each area gets to show off its best, state-of-the art new homes. The Valley’s Builders Association has been doing the event for more than 20 years, said Marcy Alamia, executive vice president of the association.
A group of panelists pore over each of the 21 homes and choose the one they think is the best. Homes weren’t judged on their costly extravaganzas, but on how impressive each was for the price range.
“The judges really had a hard time choosing a winner,” Alamia said. Anyone hoping to make an offer on the Rocass Homes’ winner entry will have to wait. “It’s a model home,” Moreno said. “We’re not selling it yet.”
